Buy a Locally made Caravan or an Imported Model…

January 10, 2023

There are literally hundreds of local caravan manufacturers in Australia, we all know of the big boys like Jayco, Jurgens, New Age, Spinifex, Paramount, Empire, Majestic, Roadstar just to name a few. Some even source products from each other which is a practical approach in the modern era of manufacturing. Most source Chinese made componentry in some shape or form.

In recent years we have seen many new van types entering the RV sector, a number of these are from Chinese manufacture’s, most are imported fully built with every bell and whistle to ensure all the comforts of travel, some are also bought in in a CKD (Complete Knock Down) form for assembly here in Australia – the method of madness in this instance is that other than a savings on the componentry our Australian labour costs make these caravans almost as expensive as the fully locally manufactured offers.

At Armadillo we have opted to partner with a reputable Chinese Caravan and Houseboat manufacturer that affords the benefits of a R&D department and a large contingent of engineers with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. We import these range of RV’s –

Some would say what would a Chinese manufacturer know about Australian conditions, other than the extreme population difference the reality is that there are considerable similarities, they have some wild open country that extends way beyond the main habitable regions but also have many hideaways within easy reach of the main regions so even their domestic market has huge growth potential as does their global export markets, particularly for easy towing offroad pop top caravans.

Obviously with importing there are challenges with the likes of currency exchange rates, container shipping and handling costs, duties and taxes but let’s face it, our local manufacturers import the majority of their materials and components from China anyway so they too, need to consider the logistical issues we factor in.

Naturally the one big question is ‘Warranty’, how do we handle this? Our supplier provides us with a unilateral structural warranty and will totally replace any failed components inside a 3 year warranty. All fixtures and fittings (other than those supported by local warranties) will be replaced inside a 12mth warranty or for the lifetime of the original owner. In some ways, this exceeds that of local manufacture’s when one considers the consumer outcries of locally supplied caravans and campers.

Allroad are an ISO 9001 accredited manufacturer and makes every effort to build the highest quality Off-Road RV’s and provide a 3-year warranty on the van chassis, all structural components and frame, and free replacement for other parts to the original owner…obviously, as one would accept, any man-made abuse is excluded.

We all start somewhere, some of us dip our feet and others dive right in. It often comes back to the size and type of tow rig we have that determines one’s limitations or some of us just want to keep it simple.

At Armadillo we are experiencing couples that have had the larger set-up now downsizing, some just because the family have flown the coop, others because they now have time to go to those out of the way spots, so the bigger van no longer suits.

We offer vans with just main beds and others with additional beds or fold-away bunks, so it is easy to take the grandies to some of those wonderful hideaways.

After sales service is everything, don’t know about you, I like to treat people the way I expect to be treated.

We have all pushed for more than what would be expected, sometimes it needs to be done.

At Armadillo we do have the luxury of ongoing support from our partner, whilst Allroad makes every effort to build the highest quality RV things can still go wrong, regardless, they provide a 3-year warranty on the van chassis and frame to the original owner, …obviously, as one would accept, any man-made abuse is excluded.
